OVERVIEW

The battle system is used to decide disputes between two characters or used in large scale battles where an outcome might not be clear. The battle system uses two skills: Vitality and Strength.

Battles are won by either party losing all of their hit points, or by mutual decision between roleplayers.

EXPLANATION OF SKILLS

Vitality will give each character a base mitigation level. This mitigation level is the same as your character's rank. If your character is rank 0 they will mitigate 0 damage.

Strength will add a bonus on top of the damage roll. This bonus is as follows:
Beginner, Novice, Able: 0
Trained: 1
Experienced: 2
Proficient: 3
Skilled: 4
Talented: 5
Expert: 6
Mastered: 7

HOW IT WORKS

A Halycyon Team member will pair up characters of similar skill levels against each other. Pairs can be requested prior to the match up phase. Both members must agree to the pair.

The staff team will then roll a D5 for a damage roll for each character per round. Rolling a 1 will result in a critical failure, and a 5 will result in a critical success. See Status Effects for further explanation of how these will affect the future rounds.

The number on the damage roll will have the strength bonus added on top.
Ex. An experienced strength character rolled a 4. They would deal 6 points of damage.

This damage roll is compared against the defender's mitigation level. The mitigation level will be subtracted from the damage roll. The remaining damage is what is dealt to the defenders health pool.

Ex. An experienced strength character rolled a 4. They would deal 6 points of damage.
An experienced vitality character has a mitigation level of 4.
6-4 = 2
The total damage dealt to the health pool would be 2.

STATUS EFFECTS

Different statuses can be applied to your character during battle which will give separate effects.

Vulnerable - Applied when you roll a critical failure on a damage roll.
Effect: The next damage roll against your character will deal double damage. Double damage applies after the mitigation.

Advantage - Applied when you roll a critical success on a damage roll.

Effect: Your next attack will deal double damage. Double damage applies after the mitigation.

Counter - Applied when you successfully mitigate all incoming damage.

Effect: You have a chance to counter attack dealing between 1-2 points of damage. The defender's mitigation level does not apply to this attack.

Stalwart - Applied when your character is dealt 10 or more points of damage in one round.

Effect: Gain +2 to your mitigation level for the next round.
